Renovating in Bristol and Surrounding Areas

back to article list

Home renovations are popular in Bristol and its surrounding areas for a few reasons. With a population of over 5 million people, the South West has beautiful scenery, long coastlines and old houses ready to be brought back to life. Bristol renovation builder Sergio Mesen has made it his passion to help people with their home renovations throughout the region. It’s not difficult to see why.

Of the locations that make up South West England, Sergio provides renovating services in Bristol, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Bath and North East Somerset. Bristol is a city with rich maritime and industrial history, with many old Byzantine architectural style factories being converted into cafes and restaurants. The city features cathedrals that date back to the 13th century, art galleries and, of course, the Clifton Suspension Bridge, designed in 1831 by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Somerset is known for its combination of scenic countryside and vast beaches. It is an ideal family destination due to its festivals, carnivals and markets. Every year, in June, Somerset holds the Glastonbury Festival, a pop festival that has been running since 1970. Within Somerset is Bath, the ultimate place for relaxation. The town features ancient Roman baths, natural thermal hot springs, performing arts shows, galleries and museums. A town worth considering if you are interested in a guesthouse renovation, perhaps.

And then there is Gloucestershire, a county boasting green countryside, stately homes and long maintained local villages. It is a peaceful location with views across the River Severn. Experiences in the area include horse racing, medieval markets and spas.

Climate Considerations

As the South West has been known to reach temperatures as high as 35°C in the summer and as cold as -15°C in the winter heating and good insulation should be considered compulsory.

Throughout the seasons, the South West has maintained much of its taste in architecture. Country homes and farmhouses are common renovation projects and many Victorian and Tudor style houses can be found. Pebble driveways are a favourite, maintaining an elegant countryside theme.

House Prices

The average cost of a house in the South West currently sits at £255,207 and there are a variety of popular styles to choose from. Sergio states that the area includes both newly built and historical homes, however “the most popular styles are Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, 30's Semi, new build and minimalist.”

Building Consent

If you are interested in a South West home renovation but the idea of applying for building consent scares you, don’t be put off. Sergio and his team can take you through the entire renovation process, from the first free consultation to the finished build. They can also advise on whether or not you will need planning permission or qualify for permitted development.

“We can provide advice and submit planning applications and building consents to the local councils. We have partnerships with local planning and building regulations professionals for this”, assures Sergio.

Renovation Types

The Bristol team offer all types of home renovations including kitchens, bathrooms, home extensions, open plan living, loft conversions and re-cladding.
