Working from home can be challenging without an allocated office. Homeowner Liz Carroll frequently works remotely, often spending many days of the week at home with her four-legged family members. She decided that it was time to adjust her living situation to better suit her needs, and got in touch with Refresh Renovations specialist Paul Cree.

Home office design

Paul met with Liz to discuss her ideas. Together, they decided a house extension would be the best way to provide Liz with her much needed office, as well as a laundry and powder room. Bringing his team of experts on board, Paul suggested material options and design solutions before providing Liz with a fixed quote and timeframe. Paul managed every stage of the renovation, including consents, and ensured the work was completed in accordance with building regulations.
“Construction was carried out on a boundary, which required the construction of a fire-rated boundary wall to comply with building regulations”, tells Paul. “The space to the side of the house that was used for the extension was not being used as it was too narrow to be used as an effective garden area. However, the space was enough, with some clever design, to create some fantastic looking additions to the home. We maximised the available space by building up to the boundary.”
Liz says working with Paul made the renovation experience easy:
“The communication was regular and open. Being advised on who was coming and what they would be doing, when and where they would be doing it, made planning easy - especially for the four-legged members of the family!”

Home office construction

Paul’s team carried out the extension using materials from Mitre 10 - being conscious of their client’s budget every step of the way.
“We kept the costs down by using lightweight construction methods with a rendered external finish to match the existing house”, explains Paul.

A new laundry and skylight

Inside the house, the team got to work on the new rooms.
In the laundry, hexagonal tiles from Beaumont Tiles were installed, which Paul describes as “a great feature to the laundry”. Storage was also an important consideration - cabinets from Amorini provided a straightforward solution. Looking upward, Refresh installed a skylight, which brings a lovely amount of natural light into the room throughout the day.

Love it! I’m extremely happy.  It makes our day-to-day living much more relaxing
“The skylight lets light flood into the laundry and was a design feature to help the space feel bright and spacious”, notes Paul.
In the study, polished timber flooring was used to match the existing flooring throughout the home. Liz now has her own quiet space to work in, with a consciously placed window providing her with a naturally lit desk area.
Following through from the study is the new powder room, featuring the same hexagonal tiles as the laundry. White painted walls keep the room looking light and spacious, while pendant lights add a touch of personality over the mirror and wall-hung vanity.
“A careful selection of lights and tapware in the powder room add style to the small space”, says Paul.

Final thoughts

With the renovation complete, Paul says with ease that it all went smoothly.
“It is always great to see the result of a well-designed extension which, although small in this case, creates a big functional difference to the home by adding three rooms.”
“Working with Paul and his team was simply wonderful”, beams Liz.
Of the final result, she says:
“Love it! I’m extremely happy.  It makes our day-to-day living much more relaxing, with more space. Having a dedicated office/study is wonderful. Having a full laundry inside the house after 10 years of a washing machine out in the garage...well, who knew that would be a luxury!
