Project Overview

This project involved a full kitchen renovation in a London home, focused on improving layout, space, and everyday usability. The existing kitchen felt closed, dated, and underutilized. The main goal was to create a more open and practical kitchen that better suited modern living.

A key part of the renovation was removing an internal wall to create an open-plan layout. This change allowed better movement, more light, and a stronger connection between the kitchen and surrounding areas. Along with the layout update, the finishes and flooring were upgraded to give the space a fresh and modern feel.

The Refresh UK team managed the construction phase and coordinated all required trades to deliver the renovation smoothly.

Design & Planning

The client’s priority was to open up the kitchen and improve how the space worked day to day. The wall removal was central to the design approach and helped transform the kitchen from a closed room into an open, social area. The client wanted to keep the kitchen in its original location in a U-shaped layout. However Refresh suggested a different layout and advised to move the kitchen to the lounge in an L-shaped format, thus providing more storage and space for an island. The client liked the idea and opted for the relocation.

During planning and early construction, some selections were revised and a few materials were upgraded. Alternative products were chosen in certain areas to improve durability and visual appeal. These changes increased the overall cost compared to the original budget but also raised the final quality of the finish.

In addition to weekly site meetings (some of them virtual) a WhatsApp group was setup with the client. It made it easier to coordinate access, confirm decisions quickly, and keep the project moving without major delays.

Project Execution

The works included demolition, wall removal, chimney breast removal, kitchen installation, flooring insulation, and replacement, and service upgrades where required. The Refresh UK team coordinated builders, plumbers, electricians, and carpenters throughout the build.

Removing the wall made the biggest difference to the space. It immediately improved flow and made the kitchen feel larger and more connected to the rest of the home.

New flooring replaced worn and outdated surfaces, helping modernise the overall look. Electrical and plumbing adjustments were completed to match the new layout and appliance positions. The kitchen installation delivered a high-spec finish with strong attention to detail.

Regular site coordination and staged work planning helped keep the project organised and efficient.

Challenges Overcome

A few minor challenges arose during the renovation, as is typical on a live construction site. Some materials, including drawer lighting, were unavailable at the time of installation, resulting in a short delay while replacements were arranged.

There was also an initial switch installed in the wrong location. It was corrected quickly, so the final layout remained practical and aligned with the intended design.

These issues were resolved through quick supplier follow-up and close coordination between trades. The Refresh UK team kept the work moving and ensured the final finish met the expected standard.

One key takeaway from the project was the importance of confirming supplier deliveries and item lists in advance to reduce installation-day gaps.

Client Experience

The client wanted a kitchen that felt more open, modern, and easier to use. They were clear about their goals and stayed engaged throughout the project. Communication remained steady, and decisions were handled quickly when adjustments were needed.

The client shared that the team was professional, responsive, and easy to work with. Questions and small issues were handled quickly, and they were kept updated from start to finish. They were very happy with the final kitchen, especially the open-plan layout and overall finish, and said they would confidently recommend the Refresh UK team.

Final Result

The completed kitchen is now open, bright, and highly functional. The wall removal transformed how the space feels and functions, while the new flooring and kitchen installation created a clean, modern finish.

Although the final cost exceeded the original budget due to material upgrades and scope adjustments, the result delivered strong value in terms of quality and usability.

This renovation highlights how smart layout changes, careful coordination, and practical problem-solving can turn a restricted kitchen into a well-designed open-plan space.
