Anita and Tim have beautiful views of the slopes of Mt Kaukau in Wellington’s Ngaio suburb from the kitchen window of their family home. But as they looked out onto the lush green hillside, they were turning their back on cluttered spaces and overflowing shelves.
When the couple decided the time was right to renovate the heart of their home, they turned to local Renovation Specialist Lia Boersma. Lia began with a comprehensive project briefing to fully understand what challenges Anita and Tim were encountering in their kitchen.
It soon became clear there was an opportunity to modernise the kitchen’s design, create additional space in previously underutilised areas, and add a popular scullery, thus contributing to greater resale value should Anita and Tim come to sell.

Costing the Project

It is often said that kitchens and bathrooms are the most expensive rooms in the house to renovate. Still, Lia was able to work to budget, creating efficiencies both in the kitchen’s design and financially. Upon listening to Anita and Tim’s requirements and taking the time to understand how the family utilised the current space, Lia prepared a concept and cost estimate.
The plan was to transform the tired kitchen into a modern, functional, and entertaining area. Complete with new flooring and a scullery, this kitchen renovation cost came in at approximately $60,000.

The Project Begins

Key to the success of the project was converting kitchen space, which wasn’t being used efficiently, into a stylish and space-saving scullery. An increasingly popular addition to many homes, sculleries offer more space within easy reach, allowing kitchens to look emptier when entertaining.
Lia worked with an in-house designer at Refresh Renovations to create the space Anita and Tim were needing. The result was a more functional, tidier kitchen with greater pantry space that not only looks bigger but gives the room a contemporary feel while staying true to the home’s natural surrounds.
Vinyl flooring chosen in light timber tones adds warmth to the kitchen. Sourced from Devon & Patterson, the neutral palette achieves a striking look when combined with Like It Kitchens’ white cabinetry.

Standout splashback

A standout feature of the new kitchen is the moss green tiled splashback above the hob, with complimentary tiling under the picture window framing the bench. The splashback colour matches the single fabric blind above the kitchen sink and contrasts beautifully with the natural bamboo benchtop, giving the space an earthy feel.

Finishing touches

The completed project has provided Anita and Tim with a fresh kitchen layout that not only modernises the room but encourages better flow to the dining room and lounge. Now, Anita and Tim can enjoy the views from their kitchen window as well as the view behind them!
