These retirees swapped out their bathtub for a luxurious new shower - but apartment renovations aren’t without their challenges.

WORDS Mina Phillips

Seeking a bathroom redesign that would suit them in their retirement years, the residents of this Tauranga apartment asked Refresh to support them in creating their ideal bathroom. The ideas they had were both practical and aesthetically attractive. With the help of their local renovation specialist, they were able to bring them to life.

Bathroom renovations generally require multiple trades. Pair this with the approval requirements generally needed for an apartment renovation - and it becomes a lot of work for one person to manage, particularly if they don’t have a strong understanding of local building regulations. By working with Refresh, these clients could state their budget and ideas, and then hand the project over to Refresh to take care of.

“They wanted to get rid of their bath and put in a large shower”, tells Refresh Tauranga’s administration manager. “They wanted the new shower to be a space they could easily move around in - almost like a wetroom. They chose their tiles from The Tile Depot - that was the main feature they wanted: floor-to-ceiling tiles.”

Once the Refresh team understood the clients’ specifications, they looked at what would need to be done in order to convert the design into a reality. Because it was an apartment renovation, body corporate permission was needed. A sound barrier also had to be installed under the tiles and approved. With this in mind, the Refresh specialist presented his clients with a design and fixed-quote. Once approved, he scheduled in and oversaw the work carried out by his team of electricians, plumbers, flooring installers, tilers and painters.

The first step was to remove the bathtub and strip back the original bathroom. The sound barrier was installed - and approved - allowing the Tauranga team to then install the new bathroom fittings from Plumbing World as well as the couple’s chosen tiles from the entranceway through to the bathroom and laundry. The consistency of the floor-to-ceiling tiling combined with the double glass sliding shower gives the bathroom a natural yet luxurious feel.

Completed in three months, the clients say they “love it”.

“They were very happy with the result and got on really well with the tradespeople. They were just lovely clients and lovely people to work with.”

In a recent review on Houzz, the clients speak very highly of their experience:

“The professionalism of each and every tradesman we dealt with was excellent. The Refresh team dealt with every problem which arose during the carrying out of this work quickly and efficiently. The completed work met all of our expectations and budget. Refresh Renovations has to be one of the best companies I have dealt with and, again, I have to say that each and every tradesman was at the top of their profession.”
