This renovation was done to update a mid-century apartment in Chiswick. The family living there needed more space and a better use of each room. They wanted the home to feel brighter and more open, with rooms that connect well and lead to the park outside.

Major Challenges

Like many old homes, this apartment had hidden problems. When work began, the team discovered numerous damp areas. These parts had to be removed and treated by a specialist. The team acted quickly and changed the schedule. This helped fix the issue without delaying the whole project.

Another key challenge was managing client-driven design changes during the construction phase. Thanks to close collaboration and on-site coordination, updates were integrated quickly, and communication channels between the design team and contractors remained open and transparent.

Lastly, global supply chain delays affected the arrival of some bespoke joinery and imported finishes. The team responded by identifying suitable local alternatives for non-critical items, preserving the original design intent while keeping the project on track.

Design Highlights

This renovation seamlessly combined thoughtful spatial planning with refined interior detailing. The most striking addition is a custom oak and brass staircase, adding warmth and understated luxury to the main living area. To support flexible living, the team installed concealed sliding wall panels, allowing rooms to be opened up or closed off depending on how the family wants to use the space.

Another standout feature is the light-filled dining area, now positioned to maximise views of the adjacent park. Design elements, including passive cooling strategies, FSC-certified timber, low-VOC paints, and hydronic heating integration, were employed to align with the clients’ values regarding sustainability and wellness.

The overall result is a series of calm, cohesive spaces that are both visually appealing and deeply functional, designed to grow and adapt with the family over time.

Project Execution

Initially planned for 3 months, the renovation was completed in 4 months, with the delay caused mainly by hold-ups in obtaining planning consent and long lead times for a few key design elements.

Refresh Renovation South West London provided a comprehensive service, encompassing concept development, construction documentation, and interior fit-out. Sam Hamdan (Project Manager) and his team also managed contract administration, finished procurement, and offered detailed custom joinery design and installation support.

Trades involved included demolition crews, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, tilers, roofers, joiners, and painters. Collaboration was key, and early involvement from all stakeholders, including the builder, allowed for issues to be resolved before they became construction blockers.

Client Feedback

The clients had a bad experience with a past bathroom job. Being honest and straightforward was particularly important this time.

Their primary goals were to create a more open and social home and to complete the work before their children began the new school year. With clear communication and collaborative planning, the Refresh Renovation UK team helped them meet all key milestones, even with a few unforeseen issues along the way.

They were especially pleased with the thoughtful touches, such as the oak and brass staircase, reconfigurable sliding panels, and the way the spaces now feel light, breathable, and welcoming.

Final Thoughts

This project demonstrates how effective planning can transform a home. The team worked together from start to finish. They made wise choices to fit the family’s needs. The apartment now feels open and helpful.

It uses eco-friendly materials and clever room layouts. Custom-made features add a special touch. The space now feels both stylish and practical.
